Matthew Chaffey has become a mainstay in the Ottawa area music scene through a combination of talent, hard work, collaboration, and impressive songwriting abilities. In 2004 he formed ‘The Brothers Chaffey’ with his brother, guitarist Curtis Chaffey. This group proved to be a crowd-pleaser, and they performed across Canada as well.
Shortly thereafter, the brothers gathered some top-notch musicians to create a soul outfit called ‘The Split’. Their sound was often described as ‘new old soul music’, and during this episode Matthew explains what this term means. During his time with ‘The Split’ Matt also had the opportunity to collaborate with The Texas Horns, and he has frequently travelled down to Texas to perform and work on recording projects. Peter Simpson said of ‘The Split’ back in 2015: “I don’t know that there’s a better band in Ottawa right now.”
During our conversation, we discuss Matt’s influences, his collaborations, his career highlights, his affiliation with RBC Bluesfest here in Ottawa, and of course, his new album.
Last year, Matthew decided to embark on his solo career and has been working on a new album called ‘Strange Reflections’. I had the opportunity to preview the album, and was impressed by the variety of songs. While this can be definitely classified as a soul album, each song sounds different. I remarked during the interview that I can imagine Daryl Hall (of Hall and Oates) singing one of his tracks, ‘I Can’t Win With You’.
As an added bonus for Stueytunes Show listeners, that song is previewed after our conversation during the episode. I think you will really enjoy it!
During ‘The Stueytunes Quiz’ portion of the show, Matt mentioned that he feels that everyone should be aware of Miss Lavelle White, who is in his opinion one of the greatest living soul singers. She is in her early nineties, and is still performing. He has shared the stage with her three times, and as I promised Matt that I would mention her in these show notes. Even better, here’s some footage of her performing, as she is being honoured at City Hall in her home town of Austin, Texas:
I had a terrific conversation with Matt, and I look forward to being able to sit down in person with him in the future. I’m grateful that he took time out to appear on the show!
